Упражнения на Past Continuous с ответами

Past Continuous описывает действие, которое шло в какой-то момент в прошлом: At 8 p.m. I was cooking dinner. Чаще всего оно встречается в рассказе как фон, на который накладывается короткое событие в Past Simple: I was cooking dinner when the phone rang.

Коротко о правиле

• Утверждение: I / he / she / it was working, you / we / they were working.
• Отрицание: wasn't working, weren't working.
• Вопрос: Was she working? What were you doing?
• Длительный фон + короткое событие: I was reading when he called.
• Два действия идут одновременно: While I was cooking, he was watching TV.
• Глаголы состояния (know, like, want, believe) в Continuous обычно не ставят.

Частые ошибки

I was knowing the answer. Know в Continuous не ставят: I knew the answer.

When I was arriving, they were eating. Короткое событие в Past Simple: When I arrived, they were eating.

They was playing. С they только were: They were playing.

I was read a book. Нужно окончание -ing: I was reading a book.

While I cooked, he was watching TV. Оба действия длились, лучше оба в Continuous: While I was cooking, he was watching TV.

Как образуется Past Continuous?

Was или were плюс глагол с окончанием -ing. Was с I, he, she, it, were с you, we, they: I was working, they were working.

Чем Past Continuous отличается от Past Simple?

Past Simple называет законченное событие: I called her. Past Continuous показывает процесс в момент прошлого, часто как фон для другого события: I was walking when she called.

Что ставить после when и while?

После while обычно идёт длительное действие в Past Continuous: while I was cooking. После when чаще короткое событие в Past Simple: when the phone rang. Но возможны оба варианта, если смысл это допускает.

С какими глаголами Past Continuous не используют?

С глаголами состояния: know, believe, like, love, want, need, understand, own. Вместо I was wanting говорят I wanted.
